De collega’s in je team, de juf in de klas, vrouwen én mannen … iedereen wordt blij van een complimentje. En dat niet alleen, complimenten geven en ontvangen blijkt ook nog eens goed voor de gezondheid. Voor je gevoel, maar bijvoorbeeld ook voor je productiviteit op de werkvloer. Hoe zit dat?
Wat gebeurt er als je een compliment krijgt?
Complimenten krijgen is goed voor mentale gezondheid. Dat komt omdat het iemands zelfbeeld versterkt, waardoor zijn/haar hersenen dopamine aanmaken. Dat is stofje waar je een positief gevoel van krijgt. Complimentjes zorgen daarbij ook nog eens voor verbinding met anderen. Dat zorgt voor een betere sociale interactie, maar je krijgt er ook meer motivatie en een beter geheugen van. Alles wat je nodig hebt om beter te presteren op je werk!

Niet alleen ontvangen, maar ook complimenten geven is goed voor je psychische gezondheid. Door iemand te complimenteren doe je namelijk iets leuks voor een ander. En daarbij komen dan ook weer fijne stofjes vrij in je lichaam. Oxytocine en het gelukshormoon serotonine, bijvoorbeeld. Daardoor wordt je meer ontspannen, heb je minder last van stress en voel je je een stuk zelfverzekerder. Mooi meegenomen!
Let op: niet alles werkt even goed
Niet elk compliment werkt even goed. ‘Wat zit je haar goed’ of ‘wat heb je een leuk t-shirt aan’ hebben maar weinig effect op je gezondheid. Net als die honderden likes op je foto op Facebook en Instagram. Die waardering is namelijk veel te algemeen. Je wordt pas echt gelukkig (en gezond!) van een goed compliment dat past bij iets waar iemand trots op is of waarde aan hecht.
Zo kun je goede complimenten geven:
- Wees specifiek
- Maak het speciaal voor de persoon in kwestie
- Wees oprecht (meen het!)
- Complimenteer iemands gedrag
